John Chapter 5
John 5:1 After these things, there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
- This entire chapter is about just one Sabbath day in Jerusalem.
John 5:2-6 Now in Jerusalem by the sheep gate, there is a pool, which is called in Hebrew, "Bethesda," having five porches. 3 In these lay a great multitude of those who were sick, blind, lame, or paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water; 4 for an angel went down at certain times into the pool, and stirred up the water. Whoever stepped in first after the stirring of the water was made whole of whatever disease he had. 5 A certain man was there, who had been sick for thirty - eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had been sick for a long time, he asked him, "Do you want to be made well?"
John 5:7 The sick man answered him, "Sir,{Or, Lord} I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I'm coming, another steps down before me."
John 5:8-14 Jesus said to him, "Arise, take up your mat,{Or, bed or, pallet} and walk." 9 Immediately, the man was made well, and took up his mat and walked. Now it was the Sabbath on that day. 10 So the Jews said to him who was cured, "It is the Sabbath. It is not lawful for you to carry the mat." 11 He answered them, "He who made me well, the same said to me, "‘Take up your mat, and walk.'" 12 Then they asked him, "Who is the man who said to you, "‘Take up your mat, and walk'"?" 13 But he who was healed didn't know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, a crowd being in the place. 14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, "Behold, you are made well. Sin no more, so that nothing worse happens to you."
- Here are some examples of what happens to us if, after we are delivered, we then return to our sinful practices:
- Matthew 12:43-45 But the unclean spirit, when he is gone out of the man, passes through waterless places, seeking rest, and doesn't find it. 44 Then he says, ‘I will return into my house from which I came out,' and when he has come back, he finds it empty, swept, and put in order. 45 Then he goes, and takes with himself seven other spirits more evil than he is, and they enter in and dwell there. The last state of that man becomes worse than the first.
- 2 Peter 2:22 But it has happened to them according to the true proverb, "The dog turns to his own vomit again," and "the sow that has washed to wallowing in the mire."
- Proverbs 26:11 As a dog that returns to his vomit, so is a fool who repeats his folly.
John 5:15-18 The man went away, and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. 16 For this cause the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to kill him, because he did these things on the Sabbath. 17 But Jesus answered them, "My Father is still working, so I am working, too." 18 For this cause therefore the Jews sought all the more to kill him, because he not only broke the Sabbath, but also called God his own Father, making himself equal with God.
- So, why is Jesus equal with God(the Father)? Is it because He has no beginning just as God has no beginning, as is taught in nearly all the so-called "Christian" churches of today? To make this claim is to deny the teachings of the Bible and of Jesus Himself. The truth, according to the Bible, is that Christ "came forth", was "brought forth", "came out from", "the firstbegotten", "the first-born of heaven", "the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father", the "beloved Son" of Father Jehovah. See http://sidnash.org/?CBS for the source of all the quotes above. Also see http://sidnash.org/?FSH for the hierarchy between Father and Son. Just as the Jews knew that to be the literal Son of God was to be equal with God, so do we also know this to be truth, because that's what the Bible teaches.
- Notice in the next couple paragraphs that Jesus speaks of Himself as if He is speaking of another person. In other words, He is speaking of Himself in 3rd-person language. In the English language, this is call an illeism.
John 5:19-23 Jesus therefore answered them, "Most certainly, I tell you, the Son can do nothing of himself, but what he sees the Father doing. For whatever things he does, these the Son also does likewise. 20 For the Father has affection for the Son, and shows him all things that he himself does. He will show him greater works than these, that you may marvel. 21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son also gives life to whom he desires. 22 For the Father judges no one, but he has given all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He who doesn't honor the Son doesn't honor the Father who sent him.
- In reference to Jesus saying, "the Father raises the dead", here is a Bible study show that it was "the Father" who raised Jesus from death => http://sidnash.org/docs/WhoRaisedJesus.html This is contrary to what many false teachers teach today.
- Jesus Christ, is worthy of all honor and praise because He truly is the literal "only-born" "Son of God". In Luke 12:8, Jesus also says: "I tell you, everyone who confesses me before men, him will the Son of Man also confess before the angels of God; 9 but he who denies me in the presence of men will be denied in the presence of the angels of God.
- Philippians 2:9-11 Therefore God also highly exalted him, and gave to him the name which is above every name; 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, those on earth, and those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
John 5:24 "Most certainly I tell you, he who hears my word, and believes him who sent me, has eternal life, and doesn't come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.
- Why did Jesus say that he who believes His Father already "has eternal life"? You'll find the answer in this Bible study => http://sidnash.org/docs/NeverDie.html
John 5:25-27 Most certainly, I tell you, the hour comes, and now is, when the dead will hear the Son of God's voice; and those who hear{Or, hearken} will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, even so he gave to the Son also to have life in himself. {Who gave the "Son of God" to have eternal life?} 27 He also gave him authority to execute judgment, because he is a son of man.
- Why should Jesus be our Judge? Hebrews 4:13 There is no creature that is hidden from his sight, but all things are naked and laid open before the eyes of him with whom we have to do. 14 Having then a great high priest, who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold tightly to our confession. 15 For we don't have a high priest who can't be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, but one who has been in all points tempted like we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore draw near with boldness to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy, and may find grace for help in time of need.
John 5:28-29 Don't marvel at this, for the hour comes, in which all that are in the tombs will hear his voice, 29 and will come out; those who have done good, to the resurrection of life; and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of judgment.
- 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with God's trumpet. The dead in Christ will rise first, 17 then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air. So we will be with the Lord forever. 18 Therefore comfort one another with these words.
- Revelation 20:5-6 This is the first resurrection. (The rest of the dead did not come back to life until the thousand years had ended.) 6 Blessed and holy are those who share in the first resurrection. For them the second death holds no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him a thousand years.
John 5:30 I can of myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is righteous; because I don't seek my own will, but the will of my Father who sent me.
- Likewise, we must remember that we, of ourselves, can do nothing without our Messiah. Look at what Jesus says about that in John 15 =>
- John 15:1-7 "I am the true vine, and my Father is the farmer. 2 Every branch in me that doesn't bear fruit, he takes away. Every branch that bears fruit, he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 You are already pruned clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, and I in you. As the branch can't bear fruit by itself, unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you, unless you remain in me. 5 I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me, and I in him, the same bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If a man doesn't remain in me, he is thrown out as a branch, and is withered; and they gather them, throw them into the fire, and they are burned. 7 If you remain in me, and my words remain in you, you will ask whatever you desire, and it will be done for you.
John 5:31 "If I testify about myself, my witness is not valid. 32 It is another who testifies about me. I know that the testimony which he testifies about me is true. 33 You have sent to John{the baptist}, and he has testified to the truth. 34 But the testimony which I receive is not from man. However, I say these things that you may be saved. 35 He was the burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light. 36 But the testimony which I have is greater than that of John, for the works which the Father gave me to accomplish, the very works that I do, testify about me, that the Father has sent me. 37 The Father himself, who sent me, has testified about me. You have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his form. 38 You don't have his word living in you; because you don't believe him whom he sent.
- Notice in just this one chapter that six times Jesus said that it was His Father who sent Him to Earth. Notice also that two times Jesus said that He can do nothing of Himself (vs. 19&30).

John 5:39 You search the Scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life; and these are they which testify about me.
- 1 Peter 1:10-11 This salvation was something even the prophets wanted to know more about when they prophesied about this gracious salvation prepared for you. 11 They wondered what time or situation the Spirit of Christ within them was talking about when he told them in advance about Christ’s suffering and his great glory afterward.
John 5:40-44 Yet you will not come to me, that you may have life. 41 I don't receive glory from men. 42 But I know you, that you don't have God's love in yourselves. 43 I have come in my Father's name{authority}, and you don't receive me. If another comes in his own name, you will receive him. 44 How can you believe, who receive glory from one another, and you don't seek the glory that comes from the only God?
John 5:45-47 "Don't think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you, even Moses, on whom you have set your hope. 46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for he wrote about me. 47 But if you don't believe his writings, how will you believe my words?"
- Father Jehovah speaking in Deuteronomy 18:15-19 Jehovah your God will raise up to you a prophet from the midst of you, of your brothers, like me. You shall listen to him ... 18 I will raise them up a prophet from among their brothers, like you; and I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I shall command him. 19 It shall happen, that whoever will not listen to my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.
- Jesus agreed, in John 12:49-50, when He said, "For I spoke not from myself, but the Father who sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. 50 I know that his commandment is eternal life. The things therefore which I speak, even as the Father has said to me, so I speak."
-
John 6:63 It is the spirit who gives life. The flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and are life. ... 68 Simon Peter answered him, ... You have the words of eternal life. 69 We have come to believe and know that you are the Christ, the Son of the living God.
