John Chapter 16
John 16:1-4 ¶ These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended. 2 They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service. 3 And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me. 4 But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.
- Regarding, "they have not known the Father", Jesus said something similar in Jn15:21 => "But all these things will they do unto you for my name's sake, because they know not him that sent me."
- Regarding, "ye may remember that I told you", Jesus said something similar in Jn14:29 => "And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe."
John 16:5-7 But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou? 6 But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
- Why did Jesus say, "It is expedient for you that I go away"? Answer: Jesus had to go back to Heaven in order for Him to send the Comforter/Sprit of Truth/Holy Spirit to his disciples. But why? Short answer from John: "because Jesus was not yet glorified"(Jn7:38-39). I have a deeper study about this => http://sidnash.org/docs/ComforterSent.html
- Regarding, "I go away", where was Jesus going away to? Answer: "I go to my Father"(vs10,16-22). Where is His Father?
- John 6:38 ... I came down from heaven... (Jesus)
- John 12:28 Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven...
- John 17:1 ¶ These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father...
- Matthew 18:10 ... their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.
Jesus explains what the Comforter will do:
John 16:8-14 And when he[the Comforter] is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 Of sin, because they believe not on me; 10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; 11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. 12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. 13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth[the Comforter - Jn15:26], is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. 14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
- Notice these things Jesus said about the Comforter/Sprit of Truth/Holy Spirit: "he shall not speak of himself... for he shall receive of mine..."(vs13-14). Consider the following verses =>
- 1 John 3:24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.
- 1 John 4:13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.
- 2 Corinthians 3:17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.
- Where did the Lord Jesus Christ get this spirit from?
- John 3:34 For he(Christ) whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him(Christ). -John the Baptist
- Acts 2:33 Therefore (Christ) being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.
John 16:15 All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
- How is it that "All things that the Father hath are" Christ's?
- Matthew 11:27 All things are delivered unto me of my Father...
- John 3:35 The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.

John 16:16 A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father. 17 Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father? 18 They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith. 19 Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do ye enquire among yourselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me? 20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy. 21 A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world. 22 And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.
- When did Jesus see His disciples again?
- John 20:19 ¶ Then the same day[of Christ's resurrection] at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. 20 And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord.
- Matthew 28:20 ... lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
John 16:23-28 ¶ And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you. 24 Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. 25 These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father. 26 At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you: 27 For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God. 28 I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.
- What did Jesus mean, when He said, "I came out from God. I came forth from the Father"?
- John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son...
- Answer: According to the scriptures, Christ "came forth", was "brought forth", "came out from", "the firstbegotten", "the first-born of heaven", "the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father", the "beloved Son" of Father Jehovah => http://sidnash.org/t/ChristTheBelovedSon.php
John 16:29-32 ¶ His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb. 30 Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God. 31 Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe? 32 Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
- John 8:29 And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.
- Regarding, "ye shall be scattered":
- Matthew 26:31 Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad.
- Jesus was quoting from Zechariah 13:7 ¶ Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the LORD of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered...
John 16:33 ¶ These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
- John 14:27 ¶ Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
- 1 John 5:4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
- 1 John 4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
- 2 Thessalonians 3:16 ¶ Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all means. The Lord be with you all.
