Galatians Chapter 3

In chapter 3, Paul gives us a thorough understanding of the difference between obedience to the law and believing(faith) the Bible truth about Yeshua, our Messiah. Notice the statements in blue about how to receive eternal life.

Galatians 3:1-6 Oh, foolish Galatians! Who has cast an evil spell on you? For the meaning of Yeshua the Messiah's crucifixion was openly set forth among you? 2 Let me ask you this one question: Did you receive the Holy Spirit by obeying the law of Moses{the Torah(the writings of Moses)}? Of course not! You received the Spirit because you believed the message you heard about Messiah. 3 How foolish can you be? After starting your new lives in the Spirit, why are you now trying to become perfect by your own human effort? 4 Did you suffer so many things in vain, if it is indeed in vain? 5 He therefore who supplies the Spirit to you{see bullet points on vs. 14} and does miracles among you, does he do it because you obey the law? Of course not! It is because you believe the message you heard about Messiah. 6 In the same way, Abraham “believed God, and it was counted him as righteous because of his faith.

Galatians 3:7-9 Know therefore that those who are of faith are children of Abraham. 8 The Scriptures looked forward to this time when God would make the Gentiles right in his sight because of their faith. God preached the Good News to Abraham long ago, saying, “In you all the nations will be blessed.” 9 So all who put their faith in Messiah share the same blessing Abraham received because of his faith.

Galatians 3:10-11 For those who depend on the law{the Torah} to make them right with God are under his curse, for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who doesn’t continue in all things that are written in the scroll of the Torah{the writings of Moses}, to do them.” 11 So it is clear that no one can be made right with God by trying to keep the law. For the Scriptures say, “It is through faith that a righteous person has life.

Galatians 3:12 This way of faith is very different from the way of the Torah, which says, “It is through obeying the law that a person has life.”( Lev18:5 )

Galatians 3:13 Messiah redeemed us from the curse of the law. He took upon himself the curse for our wrongdoing. For it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree.”( Deut21:23 )

Galatians 3:14 Through Messiah Yeshua, God has blessed the Gentiles with the same blessing he promised to Abraham, so that we who are believers might receive the promised Holy Spirit through faith.

Galatians 3:15-18 Dear brothers and sisters, here’s an example from everyday life. Just as no one can set aside or amend an irrevocable agreement, so it is in this case. 16 Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his offspring, which is Messiah. 17 Now I say this: The agreement God made with Abraham could not be canceled 430 years later when God gave the law to Moses. God would be breaking his promise. 18 For if the inheritance could be received by keeping the law, then it would not be the result of accepting God’s promise. But God has granted it to Abraham by promise.

Galatians 3:19-20 Then why is there the law? It was given alongside the promise to show people their sins, until the offspring{Messiah(vs16)} should come to whom the promise has been made. God gave his law through angels by the hand of a mediator.{see Rev1:1; 1Tim2:5 below} 20 Now a mediator is not between one, but God is one.{see Deut6:4-5; James2:19; }

Galatians 3:21 Is the law then against the promises of God? Certainly not! If the law could give us eternal life, we could be made right with God by obeying it.

Galatians 3:22 But the Scriptures declare that we are all prisoners of sin, so we receive God’s promise of freedom only by believing in Yeshua the Messiah.

Galatians 3:23-26 But before faith came, we were placed under instruction by the law{Torah}. We were kept in protective custody, so to speak, until the way of faith was revealed. 24 Let me put it another way. The law{Torah} has become our tutor to bring us to Messiah, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor{Torah}. 26 For you are all children of God, through faith in Messiah Yeshua.

Galatians 3:27-28 For as many of you as were immersed{baptized} into Messiah have put on Messiah, like putting on new clothes. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Messiah Yeshua.

Galatians 3:29 If you are Messiah’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring and heirs according to promise.

Desiring to live by every word that comes from the mouth of Jehovah ( Deut8:3; Matt4:4 )
