Galatians Chapter 3
In chapter 3, Paul gives us a thorough understanding of the difference between obedience to the law and believing(faith) the Bible truth about Yeshua, our Messiah. Notice the statements in blue about how to receive eternal life.
Galatians 3:1-6 Oh, foolish Galatians! Who has cast an evil spell on you? For the meaning of Yeshua the Messiah's crucifixion was openly set forth among you? 2 Let me ask you this one question: Did you receive the Holy Spirit by obeying the law of Moses{the Torah(the writings of Moses)}? Of course not! You received the Spirit because you believed the message you heard about Messiah. 3 How foolish can you be? After starting your new lives in the Spirit, why are you now trying to become perfect by your own human effort? 4 Did you suffer so many things in vain, if it is indeed in vain? 5 He therefore who supplies the Spirit to you{see bullet points on vs. 14} and does miracles among you, does he do it because you obey the law? Of course not! It is because you believe the message you heard about Messiah. 6 In the same way, Abraham “believed God, and it was counted him as righteous because of his faith.”
- Genesis 15:6 And he believed in Jehovah; and he reckoned it to him for righteousness.
- Romans 4:3 For what saith the scripture? And Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. 4 Now to him that worketh, the reward is not reckoned as of grace, but as of debt. 5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness. 6 Even as David also pronounces blessing upon the man, unto whom God counts righteousness apart from works,... 21 and being fully assured that what he had promised, he was able also to perform. 22 Therefore it also was “credited to him{Abraham} for righteousness.” ... 24 but for our sake also, to whom it will be accounted, who believe on him that raised Yeshua our Lord from the dead,
- James 2:19-26 You believe that God is one. You do well. The demons also believe—and shudder. 20 But do you want to know, vain man, that faith apart from works is dead? 21 Wasn’t Abraham our father justified by works, in that he offered up Isaac his son on the altar? 22 You see that faith worked with his works, and by works faith was perfected. 23 So the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him as righteousness,” and he was called the friend of God. 24 You see then that by works a man is justified, and not only by faith. 25 In the same way, wasn’t Rahab the prostitute also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way? 26 For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, even so faith apart from works is dead.
Galatians 3:7-9 Know therefore that those who are of faith are children of Abraham. 8 The Scriptures looked forward to this time when God would make the Gentiles right in his sight because of their faith. God preached the Good News to Abraham long ago, saying, “In you all the nations will be blessed.” 9 So all who put their faith in Messiah share the same blessing Abraham received because of his faith.
Galatians 3:10-11 For those who depend on the law{the Torah} to make them right with God are under his curse, for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who doesn’t continue in all things that are written in the scroll of the Torah{the writings of Moses}, to do them.” 11 So it is clear that no one can be made right with God by trying to keep the law. For the Scriptures say, “It is through faith that a righteous person has life.”
- Habakkuk 2:4 Behold, his soul is puffed up, it is not upright in him; but the righteous shall live by his faith.
- Romans 1:17 For therein is revealed a righteousness of God from faith unto faith: as it is written, But the righteous shall live by faith.
- Hebrews 10:38 But my righteous one shall live by faith: And if he shrink back, my soul hath no pleasure in him.
Galatians 3:12 This way of faith is very different from the way of the Torah, which says, “It is through obeying the law that a person has life.”( Lev18:5 )
- Leviticus 18:5 You shall therefore keep my statutes and my ordinances; which if a man does, he shall live in them: I am Yahweh[Jehovah].
- Romans 10:5-10 For Moses writes that the law’s way of making a person right with God requires obedience to all of its commands. 6 But faith’s way of getting right with God... is the very message about faith that we preach: 9 If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved.
- Romans 11:6 And since it is through God’s kindness, then it is not by their good works. For in that case, God’s grace would not be what it really is—free and undeserved.
Galatians 3:13 Messiah redeemed us from the curse of the law. He took upon himself the curse for our wrongdoing. For it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree.”( Deut21:23 )
- Note that Paul DID NOT SAY that "Messiah redeemed us from the" law, but rather "Messiah redeemed us from the curse of the law". In other words - He saved us from the penalty of the law - eternal death. THE LAW WAS NOT THE CURSE. The penalty of the law was the curse.
- 1 Peter 2:24 who his own self bare our sins in his body upon the tree, that we, having died unto sins, might live unto righteousness; by whose stripes ye were healed.
- Hebrews 4:15 For we don’t have a high priest who can’t be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, but one who has been in all points tempted like we are, yet without sin.
- Hebrews 9:15 And for this cause he{Yeshua} is the mediator of a new covenant, that a death having taken place for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first covenant, they that have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.
Galatians 3:14 Through Messiah Yeshua, God has blessed the Gentiles with the same blessing he promised to Abraham, so that we who are believers might receive the promised Holy Spirit through faith.
- Acts 2:33 {Yeshua} Being therefore by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he{Yeshua} hath poured forth this, which ye see and hear.
- 1 Corinthians 12:13 For in one Spirit were we all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether bond or free; and were all made to drink of one Spirit.
- Ephesians 2:18 for through him{Yeshua} we both have our access in one Spirit unto the Father.
- Galatians 4:6 And because ye are sons, God sent forth the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
Galatians 3:15-18 Dear brothers and sisters, here’s an example from everyday life. Just as no one can set aside or amend an irrevocable agreement, so it is in this case. 16 Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his offspring, which is Messiah. 17 Now I say this: The agreement God made with Abraham could not be canceled 430 years later when God gave the law to Moses. God would be breaking his promise. 18 For if the inheritance could be received by keeping the law, then it would not be the result of accepting God’s promise. But God has granted it to Abraham by promise.
Galatians 3:19-20 Then why is there the law? It was given alongside the promise to show people their sins, until the offspring{Messiah(vs16)} should come to whom the promise has been made. God gave his law through angels by the hand of a mediator.{see Rev1:1; 1Tim2:5 below} 20 Now a mediator is not between one, but God is one.{see Deut6:4-5; James2:19; }
- Revelation 1:1 The Revelation of Yeshua Messiah, which God gave him to show unto his servants, even the things which must shortly come to pass: and he{Yeshua( Rev22:6 )} sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John;
- Note that Paul( Gal3:19 ) and John( Rev1:1;22:6 ) agree that God speaks through His Son, and Yeshua speaks through angels. This is also in agreement with the story of the ladder that Jacob saw, while in vision( Gen23:12; Jn1:51 )
- 1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Messiah Yeshua,
- Deuteronomy 6:4-5 Hear, Israel: Yahweh is our God; Yahweh is one: 5 and you shall love Yahweh your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might.

Galatians 3:21 Is the law then against the promises of God? Certainly not! If the law could give us eternal life, we could be made right with God by obeying it.
-
Romans 3:23 for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God;
-
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Messiah Yeshua our Lord.
- 1 John 1:8-10 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we haven’t sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
Galatians 3:22 But the Scriptures declare that we are all prisoners of sin, so we receive God’s promise of freedom only by believing in Yeshua the Messiah.
- John 11:25 Yeshua said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies. 26 Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
- How is it that we can "still live, even if" we die? => http://sidnash.org/docs/NeverDie.html
Galatians 3:23-26 But before faith came, we were placed under instruction by the law{Torah}. We were kept in protective custody, so to speak, until the way of faith was revealed. 24 Let me put it another way. The law{Torah} has become our tutor to bring us to Messiah, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor{Torah}. 26 For you are all children of God, through faith in Messiah Yeshua.
- 2 Corinthians 6:18 I will be to you a Father. You will be to me sons and daughters,’ says the Lord Almighty.”
- 1 John 3:1-2 See how great a love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God! For this cause the world doesn’t know us, because it didn’t know him. 2 Beloved, now we are children of God. It is not yet revealed what we will be; but we know that when he is revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him just as he is.
Galatians 3:27-28 For as many of you as were immersed{baptized} into Messiah have put on Messiah, like putting on new clothes. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Messiah Yeshua.
- In other words, there is no discrimination. In God's eyes, we who have "put on Messiah" are equally loved, accepted, and blessed. Because of this, "you are Messiah’s" and "you are Abraham’s offspring and heirs according to promise."
Galatians 3:29 If you are Messiah’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring and heirs according to promise.
Desiring to live by every word that comes from the mouth of Jehovah ( Deut8:3; Matt4:4 )
