The Name of God the Father and His Relationship With Jesus
In Hebrew, His name is "יְהֹוָה", commonly referred to as "YHWH". This name is used over 5,500 times in the old testament. The 3 most-common English translations are "the LORD", "Jehovah", and "Yahweh" - spellings vary, but they are all translations of the same Hebrew word. For this study, I will use the word "Jehovah".
You might wonder why I think Jehovah is the name of "God the Father" in the new testament. I will show you, using the ASV translation of the Bible. My comments will be enclosed in brackets like this: {my comment}
Genesis 2:4 These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that Jehovah{YHWH} God made earth and heaven.
So, who is the Creator? Gen2:4 says it is Jehovah. In the new testament, who does it say is the Creator?
Ephesians 3:9 {Paul speaking} and to make all men see what is the dispensation of the mystery which for ages hath been hid in God who created all things;
When Paul uses the word "God", who is he referring to? Keep in mind that Paul wrote much of the new testament, including the letters to the Corinthians. This how Paul identified God =>
1 Corinthians 8:4 "... there is no God but one. 5 For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or on earth; as there are gods many, and lords many; 6 yet to us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we unto him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and we through him.
So, Paul says "there is no God but one... the Father" "who created all things" and "of whom are all things" and that He created "all things" through "Jesus Christ", the "one Lord".
Consider now what more we can learn about God from Heb1:1-3 =>
Hebrews 1:1-3 God, having of old time spoken unto the fathers in the prophets by divers portions and in divers manners, 2 hath at the end of these days spoken unto us in his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom also he made the worlds; 3 who being the effulgence of his glory, and the very image of his substance, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had made purification of sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;
Notice that this "God", long before the writing of Hebrews("of old time") spoke in various ways to the prophets. Wouldn't this be the prophets of the old testament? Consider this example of Jehovah speaking to Jeremiah(a prophet) in Jeremiah 1:4-7 .
Notice also that this God(Jehovah) has a Son(verse 2). But not only does Jehovah have a Son, but He also created all the worlds through His Son. Remember the name of the person whom the Father created all things through? It was Jesus Christ( 1Cor8:6, as seen above). We also know that it Jesus Christ by Heb1:3, because Jehovah's Son(verse 1-2) "made purification of sins", then "sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high"(verse 3).
Who "made purification of sins"?
1 John 1:7 but if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
1 John 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you that ye may not sin. And if any man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: 2 and he is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for the whole world. {See also Rev1:5; Titus2:14}.
So, now we know, according to the Bible, that Jehovah(God the Father) created all things through His Son, Jesus Christ. Did you know that the entire chapter 17 of John is Jesus praying to His Father? Look at the first 3 verses =>
John 17:1 These things spake Jesus; and lifting up his eyes to heaven, he said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that the Son may glorify thee: 2 even as thou gavest him authority over all flesh, that to all whom thou hast given him, he should give eternal life. 3 And this is life eternal, that they should know thee the only true God, and him whom thou didst send, even Jesus Christ.
Did you see Jesus saying that it is a matter of eternal life to know His Father as "the only true God"? Yep, that's what He said. Did you know that Jesus said that, "in the last day" we will be judged by His words(teachings)? You can look that up in John 12:47-50 .
Now, please consider what may be the most-popular text in the Bible =>
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have eternal life.
What does that phrase "only begotten mean? The Greek word it was translated from is "monogenḗs", meaning "only-born", according to Strong's Concordance.
Notice that Jehovah "gave" His only-born Son. Please understand that Jehovah could not have given His only-born Son if He didn't have an only-born Son to give. That's pretty obvious, isn't it :-). However most people deny this literal Father - Son relationship.
Did you know that the the Son of God was spoken about in the old testament? See => https://sidnash.org/docs/SonOfGodOT.html I think there are some additional OT texts I need to add to that study...
