Putting on the Robe of Christ's Righteousness
Theme:
God offers us Christ’s righteousness as a covering for our sin. Through faith in Jesus, we are spiritually clothed in His perfect righteousness.
Key Text:
📖 Isaiah 61:10 ... Jehovah... has covered me with the robe of righteousness...
I. The Need for a Covering (Our Sinful Condition)
Text: Romans 3:23 ... all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
-
Adam and Eve’s immediate response to sin was to try to cover themselves (Genesis 3:7-10).
-
Isaiah 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
-
Without a divine covering, we are spiritually exposed.
Illustration: Imagine someone showing up to a royal banquet in rags — completely unfit for the occasion.
II. God's Provision: The Robe of Christ's Righteousness
Text: Zechariah 3:3-4 Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and was standing before the angel. 4 And he{the angel} answered and spoke unto those that stood before him, saying, Take the filthy garments off of him. To him he said, "Behold, I have taken away your sins, and I will clothe you with rich clothing.
-
Jesus lived the perfect life we couldn’t live.
-
It is through Faith in Jesus that we are made right with God:
-
Philippians 3:9 ... I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ. For God’s way of making us right with himself depends on faith.
-
-
This is not earned — it’s a gift:
- Romans 5:17 For if, by the trespass of the one{Adam}, death reigned through the one; much more shall they that receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one, even Jesus Christ.
Main Point: The robe of righteousness is not stitched by human effort — it is provided by God.
III. Receiving the Robe: By Faith
Text: Galatians 3:27 – “For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.”
-
It’s a daily decision to put on Christ:
- Romans 13:14 ... clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the desires of the flesh.
Application Question: Are you trying to earn righteousness, or have you received it as a gift?
IV. Living Clothed in Christ: A Call to Holy Living
- Put off your old self… put on the new self.
- Ephesians 4:22-24 that you put away, as concerning your former way of life, the old man that grows corrupt after the lusts of deceit, 23 and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and put on the new man, who in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of truth.
-
Sanctification is the progressive work of the "wearing" of Christ’s character.
-
Righteousness is not just positional — it produces transformation(sanctification).
-
Our lives should reflect the beauty of the robe we’ve been given.
- Revelation 19:7-8 Let’s rejoice and be exceedingly glad, and let’s give the glory to him. For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his wife has made herself ready. 8 It was given to her that she would array herself in bright, pure, fine linen, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the holy ones.
-
Isaiah 61:10 I will greatly rejoice in the LORD! My soul will be joyful in my God, for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation. He has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
Conclusion:
We all come to God spiritually naked and stained. But in His mercy, He covers us with the robe of His Son — perfectly white, with our sins forgiven.
- 1 John 1:9 ... if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.
Have you put on Christ? Are you still wearing your own garments of effort, pride, or guilt? Today, receive the robe of Christ's righteousness by faith.
Desiring to live by every word that comes from the mouth of Jehovah ( Deut8:3; Matt4:4 )
