How Heaven Communicates with Earth – part 3
The promise of the Father - what is it?
"... when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:" "And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high." "... wait for the promise of the Father." -Jesus, John 15:26; Luke 24:49; Acts 1:4.
In part 2, we learned that the Comforter, Sprit of Truth, & Holy Spirit are all references to the Spirit of Christ. We also learned that Christ's spirit is His words and His words are life eternal(Jn6:63,68). According to John the Baptist, Christ words came from His Father as His Father's spirit: "For he[Jesus] whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him."-jn3:34.
"If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?" "Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you." -Jesus, Luke 11:13; John 16:23
And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. -Paul, Galatians 4:6
So, if we ask His Father, in Jesus' name, for the Holy Spirit, we will receive it. And, what is "it"? The Spirit of His Son - Jesus Christ, which He received from His Father.(Jn3:34-36). Notice these definitions:
"Holy" in Strong's Greek Dictionary: hágios, hag'-ee-os; sacred (physically, pure, morally blameless or religious, ceremonially, consecrated). KJV Translation(s):--(most) holy (one, thing), saint.
"Spirit" in Strong's Greek Dictionary: pneûma, pnyoo'-mah; by analogy or figuratively, a spirit, i.e. (human) the rational soul, (by implication) vital principle, mental disposition, etc., or (superhuman) an angel, demon, or (divine) God, Christ's spirit, the Holy Spirit
KJV Translation(s):--ghost, life, spirit(-ual, -ually), wind.
We also saw in part 2 that while Jesus was still on earth, "the Holy Spirit was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified." (John 7:38-39). We also saw that after the Holy Spirit was given at Pentecost, Peter explained:
Jesus, "being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear." (Acts 2:33).
Preparation to receive the promise of the Father
The disciples returned to Jerusalem "And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James. 14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren." All together, there were about 120. (Acts 1:13-15). "And when the day of Pentecost was now come, they were all together in one place."(Acts 2:1).
Dictionary Definitions:
ACCORD: Agreement; harmony of minds; consent or concurrence of opinions or wills.
SUPPLICATION: 1)Entreaty; humble and earnest prayer in worship. 2) Petition; earnest request.
So, as a group, should we expect to receive the Holy Spirit if we are NOT "with one accord in prayer and supplication"?
Receiving the promise of the Father - the Holy Spirit
And when the day of Pentecost was now come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound as of the rushing of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues, like as of fire; and it sat upon each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. (Acts 2:1-4)
Wind, Tongues, Fire, Clouds and Angels

Pentecost - Acts 2
Receiving the Holy Spirit through the ministry of the Angels:
And when the day of Pentecost was now come, they were all [with one accord] in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound as of the rushing of a mighty wind[Heb1:7; Ps104:3-4; 2Kings2:11; Zech6:5], and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues, like as of fire[Heb1:7; Ps104:4; 2Kings2:11;6:17; Ezekiel1:13-14; Daniel7:9; 2Thes1:7]; and it sat upon each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. (Acts 2:1-4)
Results of receiving Christ's Holy Spirit:
Acts 2:5 Now there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven. 6 And when this sound was heard, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speaking in his own language. 7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying, Behold, are not all these that speak Galilaeans? 8 And how hear we, every man in our own language wherein we were born? 9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, in Judaea and Cappadocia, in Pontus and Asia, 10 in Phrygia and Pamphylia, in Egypt and the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and sojourners from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabians, we hear them speaking in our tongues the mighty works of God. 12 And they were all amazed, and were perplexed, saying one to another, What meaneth this? 13 But others mocking said, They are filled with new wine. 14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and spake forth unto them, saying, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and give ear unto my words. 15 For these are not drunken, as ye suppose; seeing it is but the third hour of the day. 16 but this is that which hath been spoken through the prophet Joel: 17 And it shall be in the last days, saith God, I will pour forth of my Spirit upon all flesh: And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, And your young men shall see visions, And your old men shall dream dreams: 18 Yea and on my servants and on my handmaidens in those days Will I pour forth of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. 19 And I will show wonders in the heaven above, And signs on the earth beneath; Blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke: 20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood, Before the day of the Lord come, That great and notable day. 21 And it shall be, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. 22 Ye men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God unto you by mighty works and wonders and signs which God did by him in the midst of you, even as ye yourselves know; 23 him, being delivered up by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye by the hand of lawless men did crucify and slay: 24 whom God raised up, having loosed the pangs of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it. 25 For David saith concerning him, I beheld the Lord always before my face; For he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved: 26 Therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; Moreover my flesh also shall dwell in hope: 27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul unto Hades, Neither wilt thou give thy Holy One to see corruption. 28 Thou madest known unto me the ways of life; Thou shalt make me full of gladness with thy countenance. 29 Brethren, I may say unto you freely of the patriarch David, that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us unto this day. 30 Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins he would set one upon his throne; 31 he foreseeing this spake of the resurrection of the Christ, that neither was he left unto Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. 32 This Jesus did God raise up, whereof we all are witnesses. 33 Being therefore by the right hand of God exalted, and [Christ] having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he hath poured forth this, which ye see and hear.
- Notice it was Christ who received the Holy Spirit from His Father. This is "the promise of the Father" that we've been looking for. It is Christ's Holy Spirit, given to Him by His Father.
- For he[Christ] whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him. The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand. He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. -John the baptist, John 3:34-36
- Galatians 4:6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
- 1 Corinthians 15:45 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.
- 2 Corinthians 3:17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
34 For David ascended not into the heavens: but he saith himself, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, 35 Till I make thine enemies the footstool of thy feet.[see: Ps110:1;Matthew22:42-45;Ephesians1:22;Hebrews1:13]
- Psalm 110:1 Jehovah saith unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, Until I make thine enemies thy footstool.
- Matthew 22:42 Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David. 43 He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying, 44 The LORD[Jehovah] said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool? 45 If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?
36 Let all the house of Israel therefore know assuredly, that God hath made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom ye crucified. 37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and the rest of the apostles, Brethren, what shall we do? 38 And Peter said unto them, Repent ye, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ unto the remission of your sins; and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For to you is the promise, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call unto him. 40 And with many other words he testified, and exhorted them, saying, Save yourselves from this crooked generation. 41 They then that received his word were baptized: and there were added unto them in that day about three thousand souls.
Living by every word that comes from the mouth of Jehovah (Deut8:3;Mt4:4)
