Ephesians Chapters 5 & 6
About Our Behavior
Ephesians 5:1 Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children.
- Matthew 5:43-48 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor 44 But I tell you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you, 45 that you may be children of your Father who is in heaven... 48 Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.(Jesus)
Ephesians 5:2 Live a life filled with love, following the example of Messiah. He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God.
- John 13:34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also love one another.(Jesus)
- Matthew 20:26-28 ... whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant. 27 Whoever desires to be first among you shall be your bondservant, 28 even as the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”(Jesus)
- 2 Corinthians 8:9 For you know the grace of our Lord Yeshua the Messiah, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that you through his poverty might become rich.
Ephesians 5:3 Let there be no sexual immorality, impurity, or greed among you. Such sins have no place among God’s people.
- There are a lot of texts on this subject. Many can be read here => http://sidnash.org/b/bbg
Ephesians 5:4 Obscene stories, foolish talk, and coarse jokes—these are not for you. Instead, let there be thankfulness to God.
- Colossians 3:8 but now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and shameful speaking out of your mouth.
- Ephesians 4:29 Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but only what is good for building others up as the need may be, that it may give grace to those who hear.
- Proverbs 15:2 The tongue of the wise commends knowledge, but the mouths of fools gush out folly.
- Hebrews 13:15 Through him, then, let’s offer up a sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of lips which proclaim allegiance to his name.
Ephesians 5:5 You can be sure that no immoral, impure, or greedy person will inherit the Kingdom of Messiah and of God. For a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world.
- 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 Or don’t you know that the unrighteous will not inherit God’s Kingdom? Don’t be deceived. Neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor male prostitutes, nor homosexuals, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor slanderers, nor extortionists, will inherit God’s Kingdom.
- Colossians 3:5 Put to death therefore your members which are on the earth: sexual immorality, uncleanness, depraved passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.
Ephesians 5:6-7 Don’t be fooled by those who try to excuse these sins, for the anger of God will fall on all who disobey him. 7 Don’t participate in the things these people do.
- Romans 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,
- Colossians 2:8 Be careful that you don’t let anyone rob you through his philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the elemental spirits of the world, and not after Messiah.
- Matthew 24:4 Yeshua answered them, "Be careful that no one leads you astray."
- Revelation 18:4 I heard another voice from heaven, saying, "Come out of her, my people, that you have no participation in her sins, and that you don’t receive of her plagues,"
Ephesians 5:8-10 For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light! 9 for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth. 10 Carefully determine what pleases the Lord.
- John 8:12 Again, therefore, Yeshua spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.”
- 1 John 3:9-10 Whoever is born of God doesn’t commit sin, because his seed remains in him, and he can’t sin, because he is born of God. 10 In this the children of God are revealed, and the children of the devil. Whoever doesn’t do righteousness is not of God, neither is he who doesn’t love his brother.
Ephesians 5:11-14 Have no fellowship with the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but rather even reprove them. 12 For it is a shame even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret. 13 But their evil intentions will be exposed when the light shines on them, 14 for the light makes everything visible. This is why it is said, “Awake, O sleeper, rise up from the dead, and Christ will give you light.”( Isaiah 60:1 )
- Romans 13:12 The night is far gone, and the day is near. Let’s therefore throw off the deeds of darkness, and let’s put on the armor of light.
- 2 Thessalonians 3:6 Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Yeshua the Messiah, that you withdraw yourselves from every brother who walks in rebellion and not after the tradition which they received from us.
- John 3:20-21 For everyone who does evil hates the light and doesn’t come to the light, lest his works would be exposed. 21 But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his works may be revealed, that they have been done in God.”(Jesus)
- Isaiah 60:1 Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the LORD’s glory has risen on you!
Ephesians 5:15-16 Therefore watch carefully how you walk, not as the foolish, but as wise, 16 Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days.
- Proverbs 14:8 The wisdom of the prudent is to think about his way, but the folly of fools is deceit.
- James 3:13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by his good conduct that his deeds are done in gentleness of wisdom.
Ephesians 5:17 Therefore, don’t be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
- Romans 12:2 Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God.
Ephesians 5:18 Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Spirit{of God}, (rather than with the evil spirits of strong drink)
- Proverbs 20:1 Wine is a mocker and beer is a brawler. Whoever is led astray by them is not wise.
- Isaiah 5:22 Woe to those who are mighty to drink wine, and champions at mixing strong drink;
- Note that, while the Bible forbids drunkenness because it "will ruin your life", it does not forbid the use of alcohol that does not lead to drunkenness. But that is a different study for another time...
Ephesians 5:19 {be filled with the Spirit,(verse 18)} singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts.
- Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Messiah dwell in you richly; in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your heart to the Lord.
Ephesians 5:20-21 And give thanks always concerning all things in the name of our Lord Yeshua the Messiah to God, the Father; 21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Messiah.
- 1 Thessalonians 5:18 In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Messiah Yeshua toward you.
- Philippians 2:3 doing nothing through rivalry or through conceit, but in humility, each counting others better than himself;
Relations Between Wives, Husbands, Children, & Fathers
Ephesians 5:22-24 For wives, this means submit to your husbands as to the Lord. 23 For a husband is the head of his wife as Messiah also is the head of the assembly, being himself the savior of his body, the church. 24 But as the assembly submits to Messiah, so let the wives also submit to their own husbands in everything.
- 1 Peter 3:1-2 In the same way, wives, be in subjection to your own husbands, so that, even if any don’t obey the Word, they may be won by the behavior of their wives without a word, 2 seeing your pure behavior in fear.
- 1 Corinthians 11:3-4 But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God. 4 Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoreth his head.
Ephesians 5:25-29 For Husbands, this means love your wives, even as Messiah also loved the assembly and gave up his life for her 26 to make her holy and clean, washed by the cleansing of God’s word, 27 that he might present the assembly without a spot or wrinkle or any other blemish. Instead, she will be holy and without fault. 28 In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives as they love their own bodies. For a man who loves his wife actually shows love for himself. 29 No one hates his own body but feeds and cares for it, just as the Lord cares for the church.
- 1 Peter 3:7 You husbands, in the same way, live with your wives according to knowledge, giving honor to the woman as to the weaker vessel, as also being joint heirs of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered.
- Colossians 3:19 Husbands, love your wives, and don’t be bitter against them.
Ephesians 5:30-32 And we are members of his{Yeshua's} body, of his flesh and bones. 31 As the Scriptures say, “A man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one flesh.”{ Genesis 2:24 } 32 This mystery is great, but it is an illustration of the way Messiah and the assembly are one.
- John 17:20-23 Not for these only do I pray, but for those also who will believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one; even as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be one in us; that the world may believe that you sent me. 22 The glory which you have given me, I have given to them, that they may be one, even as we are one, 23 I in them, and you in me, that they may be perfected into one, that the world may know that you sent me and loved them, even as you loved me.(Jesus)
Ephesians 5:33 So again I say, each man must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.
Ephesians 6:1-3 Children, obey your parents because you belong to the Lord, for this is the right thing to do. 2 “Honor your father and mother.” This is the first commandment with a promise: 3 If you honor your father and mother, “things will go well for you, and you will have a long life on the earth.”
- Exodus 20:12 Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which the LORD your God gives you. (the 5th of the 10 Commandments)
- Proverbs 23:22 Listen to your father who gave you life, and don’t despise your mother when she is old.
- Proverbs 6:20 My son, keep your father’s commandment, and don’t forsake your mother’s teaching.
- Proverbs 1:8 My son, listen to your father’s instruction, and don’t forsake your mother’s teaching;
Ephesians 6:4 You fathers, don’t provoke your children to wrath, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
- Colossians 3:21 Fathers, don’t provoke your children, so that they won’t be discouraged.
Ephesians 6:5-8 Servants, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear. Serve them sincerely as you would serve Messiah, 6 not in the way of service only when eyes are on you, as men pleasers, but as servants of Messiah, doing the will of God from the heart. 7 Work with enthusiasm, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. 8 knowing that whatever good thing each one does, he will receive the same good again from the Lord, whether he is bound or free.
- 1 Peter 2:18-21 Servants, be in subjection to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the wicked. 19 For it is commendable if someone endures pain, suffering unjustly, because of conscience toward God. 20 For what glory is it if, when you sin, you patiently endure beating? But if when you do well, you patiently endure suffering, this is commendable with God. 21 For you were called to this, because Messiah also suffered for us, leaving you an example, that you should follow his steps,
- Hebrews 12:2 looking to Yeshua, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising its shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
- Titus 2:9-10 Exhort servants to be in subjection to their own masters and to be well-pleasing in all things, not contradicting, 10 not stealing, but showing all good fidelity, that they may adorn the doctrine of God, our Savior, in all things.
Ephesians 6:9 Masters, treat your slaves in the same way. Don’t threaten them; remember, you both have the same Master in heaven, and he has no favorites.
- Job 31:13-15 “If I have despised the cause of my male servant or of my female servant, when they contended with me, 14 what then will I do when God rises up? When he visits, what will I answer him? 15 Didn’t he who made me in the womb make him? Didn’t one fashion us in the womb?
- The "Golden Rule" =>Matthew 7:12 Therefore, whatever you desire for men to do to you, you shall also do to them; for this is the Torah{1st 5 books of the Bible(by Moses)} and the Prophets{the remainder of the Tanakh, commonly known as the "old testament"}. [It seems to me(Sid) that Jesus said here that the "Golden Rule" sums up the teaching of the "old testament".]
Put on the Armor of God
Ephesians 6:10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.
- Isaiah 40:31 but those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.
- Deuteronomy 20:3-4 and shall tell them, “Hear, Israel, you draw near today to battle against your enemies. Don’t let your heart faint! Don’t be afraid, nor tremble, neither be scared of them; 4 for the LORD{Jehovah} your God{elohim} is he who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.”
Ephesians 6:11-12 Put on the whole armor of God,{why?} that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world’s rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.
- 2 Corinthians 10:4 for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but mighty before God to the throwing down of strongholds,
- Romans 13:12 The night is far gone, and the day is near. Let’s therefore throw off the deeds of darkness, and let’s put on the armor of light.
- 1 Peter 5:8 Be sober and self-controlled. Be watchful.{why?} Your adversary, the devil, walks around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
Ephesians 6:13-14 Therefore put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14 Stand therefore, having the utility belt of truth buckled around your waist, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness.
- John 14:6 Yeshua said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.
- Isaiah 59:17 He put on righteousness as a breastplate, and a helmet of salvation on his head. He put on garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a mantle.
- 2 Corinthians 6:7 in the word of truth, in the power of God, by the armor of righteousness on the right hand and on the left,
Ephesians 6:15 For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared.
- Isaiah 52:7 How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace, who brings good news, who proclaims salvation, who says to Zion, “Your God reigns!”
- Romans 10:15 And how will they proclaim unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who proclaim the Good News of peace, who bring glad tidings of good things!”
Ephesians 6:16 above all, taking up the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the devil.
- 1 John 5:4-5 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world: your faith. 5 Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Yeshua is the Son of God? (It is sad that most "Christians" today don't believe that "Yeshua is the Son of God".)
- Genesis 15:1 After these things the LORD’s{Jehovah's} word came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Don’t be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.”
Ephesians 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
- 1 Thessalonians 5:8 But since we belong to the day, let’s be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet, the hope of salvation.
Isaiah 59:17 He put on righteousness as a breastplate, and a helmet of salvation on his head. He put on garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a mantle. - Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and is able to discern the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
- Revelation 19:15 Out of his mouth proceeds a sharp, double-edged sword {"the word of God"} that with it he should strike the nations. He will rule them with an iron rod. He treads the wine press of the fierceness of the wrath of God, the Almighty.
Ephesians 6:18 Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.
- 1 Thessalonians 5:17 Pray without ceasing.
- Colossians 4:2 Continue steadfastly in prayer, watching in it with thanksgiving,
- Philippians 4:6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.
- 1 Timothy 2:1 I exhort therefore, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and givings of thanks be made for all men,
Conclusion
Ephesians 6:19-20 Pray for me, that utterance may be given to me in opening my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the Good News{Gospel}. 20 I am in chains now, still preaching this message as God’s ambassador. So pray that I will keep on speaking boldly for him, as I should.
Ephesians 6:21-22 But that you also may know my affairs, how I am doing, Tychicus, the beloved brother and faithful servant in the Lord, will make known to you all things. 22 I have sent him to you for this very purpose, that you may know our state and that he may comfort your hearts.
Ephesians 6:23-24 Peace be with you, dear brothers and sisters, and may God the Father and the Lord Yeshua the Messiah give you love with faithfulness. 24 Grace be with all those who love our Lord Yeshua the Messiah with incorruptible love. Amen.
Desiring to live by every word that comes from the mouth of Jehovah ( Deut8:3; Matt4:4 )
