For ten years James was postmaster of Cheekville, now Cedar Springs; at the same time he served as justice of the peace. James Griffith had seven children: Hugh White; Martha A.; Mary, who married Robert Price; William, who married Louisa Condra;Louisa J., who married the Rev. John H. Parrott; Peyton S., who married May Briggle; and Susan

James married Violet Hendrix. (Violet Hendrix was born in 1817 in Tennessee.)

James next married Jane McClain, daughter of Daniel McClain and Malinda Yarnell.
