John 14

LESSONS FROM JESUS:
COMFORTER, SPIRIT OF TRUTH, HOLY SPIRIT,
CHRIST IN US, ASK IN JESUS' NAME
AS RECORDED IN JOHN 14

JESUS IS PREPARING A PLACE FOR US IN HIS FATHER'S HOUSE

verse 1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. 2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. 4 And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know. 5 Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?

JESUS - THE ONLY WAY TO THE ONLY TRUE GOD
(Jesus identies His Father as the "only true God" in John 17:3)

6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. 7 If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him. 8 Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us. 9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father? 10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake.
*********** NOTE **************
The author of Hebrews, in chapter 1, verse 3-9, describes Jesus as "the brightness of his[Father's] glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high: 4 Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. 5 For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son? 6 And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him. 7 And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire. 8 But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom. 9 Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows." -Hebrews 1:3-9

Now that's interesting! Even though His Father calls Christ "O God" in verse 8, He says that Christ has a God("thy God") in verse 9. So, who is the God of Jesus? Jesus answers in John 20:17 "Jesus saith unto her... I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God." Our Father is clearly identified as the God of Jesus again in 2Cor 1:3; 11:31; Eph 1:3,17; 1Pet 1:3; Rev 3:12. So, it still makes sense for Jesus to identify His Father as the "only true God" in John 17:3.
********* END NOTE ************

WHATEVER WE ASK OF OUR FATHER, IN JESUS' NAME, JESUS WILL DO IT

12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father. 13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

"ANOTHER COMFORTER" = "SPIRIT OF TRUTH"

15 If ye love me, keep my commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; 17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
*********** NOTE **************
When considering the phrase, "another Comforter", let's consider these four points:

1) Notice that Jesus identified Himself as the Comforter, when He said "I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you", in verse 18.

2) Remember the walk to Emmaus, where Jesus appeared to two of his disciples soon after His resurection? Look how Mark records this in chapter 16, verse 12: Jesus "appeared in another form unto two of them..." So, wouldn't it be possible, after Jesus went to Heaven, for Him to come "in another form" as the Comforter that He mentions in verse 16(above)? Did you know that the Bible refers to the "Spirit of the Lord" 29 times, "the Spirit of Christ" 2 times, and "the Spirit of Jesus Christ" once? Also consider these texts: "God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts..."-Galatians 4:6. "Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty."-2 Corinthians 3:17. "... Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his."-Romans 8:9. Could it be that the omnipresence of our glorified Savior, Jesus Christ, is the Comforter? I think so.

3) The Greek word translated here as "Comforter" is "paraklētos"(G3875), which occurs exactly 5 times in the Bible. In 4 of those 5 occurances, Jesus is speaking of the of the Comforter(John 14:16,26; 15:25; 16:7). In the 5th occurance of the word "paraklētos", it is translated to the English word "advocate", rather than "Comforter". Check it out: "My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:"-1 John 2:1. Here we saw Jesus clearly identified as the paraklētos, meaning advocate/Comforter. Closely related, remember that in verse 6, Jesus said, "... no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."

4) "But wait!", some may say, "Jesus was clearly talking about another person." Did you know that the New Testament authors recorded Jesus speaking of Himself in third-person language nearly 80 times? See for yourself. Here are some examples: John 3:16, Matthew 13:41, 17:22-23, 19:28, 24:27,30; John 5:19,25-27, 17:1-3. So, it is entirely possible that when Jesus spoke of another Comforter, He was actually speaking of Himself, just as He did when He said, "For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;"-John 5:26.

JESUS PROMISES TO COME TO US AS THE COMFORTER

18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. 19 Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.

JESUS IN HIS FATHER, WE IN JESUS, JESUS IN US

20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.

IF WE OBEY, JESUS WILL MANIFEST HIMSELF TO US

21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. 22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?

IF WE LOVE JESUS, WE WILL OBEY HIM, THEN JESUS & HIS FATHER WILL LIVE WITH US.

23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. 24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.
*********** NOTE **************
Notice that the words of Jesus are not His own, but His Father's, who sent Him to Earth. He said something similar in John 5:19,30; 8:28;
********* END NOTE ************

"THE COMFORTER" = "HOLY GHOST"

25 These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. 26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
*********** NOTE **************
Jesus just said that His Father will send the Comforter(Holy Ghost) "IN MY NAME". Do you remember what Jesus said in verse 13? "And whatsoever ye shall ask IN MY NAME, THAT WILL I DO"
********* END NOTE ************

JESUS GIVES US PEACE

27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. 28 Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.

Christ's Father is greater than Christ. Many more texts which speak to the hierarchy between Father & Son: https://www.facebook.com/sid.nash/posts/10216348334795588

CHRIST'S CONCLUSION

29 And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe. 30 Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me. 31 But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence.

MY CONCLUSION

The Comforter = the Holy Ghost/Spirit = the Spirit of Truth = the Spirit of Christ = the omnipresence of our Glorified Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ. There is no other way to our Father, the "only true God"(Jn17:3), except through Jesus Christ(Jn14:6). No other being stands between me and my Savior. Praise God!
