The Agency of the Holy Spirit

“In the days of the apostles He wrought mightily for His church through the agency of the Holy Spirit” (AA 53.1)

“As they go forth to the day’s duties, they have the assurance that the unseen agency of the Holy Spirit enables them to be ‘laborers together with God’” (AA 56.2)

“The wise virgins, the waiting ones, had their faith and love and patience nourished by the oil of the Spirit of God. Thus it must be with each one who is saved. It is by the Spirit, the gracious agency of heaven, that the lamp is kept from flickering” (1888 1761.2).

"The work of the holy Spirit is immeasurably great. It is from this source that power and efficiency come to the worker for God; and the holy Spirit is the comforter, as the personal presence of Christ to the soul. He who looks to Christ in simple, childlike faith, is made a partaker of the divine nature through the agency of the holy Spirit." RH November 29, 1892, par. 3

"The incarnation of Christ, His divinity, His atonement, His wonderful life in heaven as our Advocate, the office of the Holy Spirit—all those living, vital themes of Christianity are revealed from Genesis to Revelation." {Lt67-1895.14}

"In describing to His disciples the office work of the Holy Spirit, Jesus sought to inspire them with the joy and hope that inspired His own heart. He rejoiced because of the abundant help He had provided for His church. The Holy Spirit was the highest of all gifts that He could solicit from His Father for the exaltation of His people." DA 671.2

Who are the "agents" of the agency of the Holy Spirit OR the office workers of the office of the Holy Spirit?

1. Angels

   • “Angels work harmoniously. Perfect order characterizes all their movements. The more closely we imitate the harmony and order of the angelic host, the more successful will be the efforts of these heavenly agents in our behalf” (1T 649.2)

   • "Through the agency of His Spirit and His angels He ministers to the children of men." MH 417.2

2. Humans

   • “It is the privilege of every soul to be a living channel through which God can communicate to the world the treasures of His grace, the unsearchable riches of Christ. There is nothing that Christ desires so much as agents who will represent to the world His Spirit and character. There is nothing that the world needs so much as the manifestation through humanity of the Saviour’s love. All heaven is waiting for channels through which can be poured the holy oil to be a joy and blessing to human hearts” (COL 419.2)

   • “From the beginning, God has been working by His Holy Spirit through human instrumentalities for the accomplishment of His purpose in behalf of the fallen race” (AA 53.1)

   • "All power in heaven and earth He commands, and combines His divine sympathies and angelic instrumentalities with the living human agent on earth. ” (7LtMs, Lt 45, 1892, par. 29)

   • “The people of God on earth are the human agents that are to cooperate with divine agencies for the salvation of men.” (2SM 123.1)

3. Church

   • Christ is the fountain; the church is the channel of communication” (AA 122.4)
