Zechariah 4 - verse-by-verse
<< This study is a work in progress -- not finished yet... >>
Zechariah 4:1 ¶ And the angel that talked with me came again, and waked me, as a man that is wakened out of his sleep, 2 And said unto me, What seest thou? And I said, I have looked, and behold a candlestick all of gold, with a bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which are upon the top thereof:
- Revelation 4:5 And out of the throne proceed lightnings and voices and thunders. And there was seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God;
- Revelation 8:2 And I saw the seven angels which stood before God
- Hebrews 1:7 Are they[angels] not all ministering spirits...?
3 And two olive trees by it, one upon the right side of the bowl, and the other upon the left side thereof. 4 So I answered and spake to the angel that talked with me, saying, What are these, my lord? 5 Then the angel that talked with me answered and said unto me, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord. 6 Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of [Jehovah] unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith [Jehovah] of hosts.
- According to the angel, the "two olive trees" are "the word of [Jehovah]", which said, "Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit...", which we saw represented by the "seven lamps"(vs2) "which are the seven Spirits of God"(Rev4:5). This must be a representation of the Holy Spirit, as delivered to us by "the seven angels which stood before God"(Rev8:2).
7 Who art thou, O great mountain? before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain: and he shall bring forth the headstone thereof with shoutings, crying, Grace, grace unto it.
8 ¶ Moreover the word of [Jehovah] came unto me, saying, 9 The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it; and thou shalt know that [Jehovah] of hosts hath sent me unto you. 10 For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of [Jehovah], which run to and fro through the whole earth.
- "those seven", must be the "seven lamps" of verse 2, which we saw as a reference to "Spirits of God" - "angels which stood before God". By this, it seems likely that the angels are also "the eyes of [Jehovah]", but is there further evidence? Yes.
- Zechariah 1:9 Then said I, O my lord, what are these? And the angel that talked with me said unto me, I will show thee what these are. 10 And the man that stood among the myrtle-trees answered and said, These are they whom Jehovah hath sent to walk to and fro through the earth. 11 And they answered the angel of Jehovah that stood among the myrtle-trees, and said, We have walked to and fro through the earth, and, behold, all the earth sitteth still, and is at rest.
- Proverbs 15:3 The eyes of Jehovah are in every place, Keeping watch upon the evil and the good.
- The angels "whom Jehovah hath sent to walk to and fro through the earth" "are in every place, Keeping watch upon the evil and the good." These angels are "the eyes of Jehovah."
11 ¶ Then answered I, and said unto him, What are these two olive trees upon the right side of the candlestick and upon the left side thereof? 12 And I answered again, and said unto him, What be these two olive branches which through the two golden pipes empty the golden oil out of themselves? 13 And he answered me and said, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord. 14 Then said he, These are the two anointed ones, that stand by the Lord of the whole earth.
- Revelation 11:3 And I will give unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth. 4 These are the two olive trees and the two candlesticks, standing before the Lord of the earth.
- Acts 17:24 The God that made the world and all things therein, he, being Lord of heaven and earth...
- Psalm 97:5 The mountains melted like wax at the presence of Jehovah, At the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.
- Matthew 11:25 ... Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth...
- We now see that the Lord of the earth of Zech4:14 & Rev11:4 is the Creator - Jehovah, the Father of Jesus.
- We now see that the "two olive trees" are "the word of [Jehovah]"(vs.3-6) as witnessed by "the two anointed ones"(vs.14) - Jehovah's "two witnesses"(Rev11:3-4) that stand before Father Jehovah.
- Psalm 119:105 Thy[Jehovah's-vs.107] word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
- Deuteronomy 8:3 ... man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of [Jehovah] doth man live.
- "Jesus declares of the Old Testament Scriptures, “They are they which testify of me.” In this dispensation, he says that his works bear witness of him. By what means do they bear witness of him? Ever since those disciples who were personally associated with him while on earth passed off the stage of life, his works have borne witness of him only through the medium of the New Testament, where alone we find them recorded... These declarations and considerations are sufficient to sustain the conclusion that the Old and New Testaments, one given in one dispensation, and the other in the other, are Christ’s two witnesses." (Uriah Smith)
Desiring to live by every word that comes from the mouth of Jehovah (Deut8:3; Mt4:4)
