Matthew 20:1“FortheKingdomofHeavenislikeamanwhowasthemasterofahousehold,whowentoutearlyinthemorningtohirelaborersforhisvineyard.2Whenhehadagreedwiththelaborersforadenarius{A denarius is a silver Roman coin worth 1/25th of a Roman aureus. This was a common wage for a day of farm labor.}aday,hesentthemintohisvineyard.3Hewentoutaboutthethirdhour,{Time was measured from sunrise to sunset, so the third hour would be about 9:00 a.m.}andsawothersstandingidleinthemarketplace.4Hesaidtothem,‘Youalsogointothevineyard,andwhateverisrightIwillgiveyou.’Sotheywenttheirway.5Againhewentoutaboutthesixthandtheninthhour,{noon and 3:00 p.m.}anddidlikewise.6Abouttheeleventhhour{5:00 p.m.}hewentoutandfoundothersstandingidle.Hesaidtothem,‘Whydoyoustandherealldayidle?’
Matthew 20:7“Theysaidtohim,‘Becausenoonehashiredus.’“Hesaidtothem,‘Youalsogointothevineyard,andyouwillreceivewhateverisright.’
Matthew 20:8“Wheneveninghadcome,thelordofthevineyardsaidtohismanager,‘Callthelaborersandpaythemtheirwages,beginningfromthelasttothefirst.’9“Whenthosewhowerehiredatabouttheeleventhhourcame,theyeachreceivedadenarius.10Whenthefirstcame,theysupposedthattheywouldreceivemore;andtheylikewiseeachreceivedadenarius.11Whentheyreceivedit,theymurmuredagainstthemasterofthehousehold,12saying,‘Theselasthavespentonehour,andyouhavemadethemequaltouswhohavebornetheburdenofthedayandthescorchingheat!’
Matthew 20:13“Butheansweredoneofthem,‘Friend,Iamdoingyounowrong.Didn’tyouagreewithmeforadenarius?14Takethatwhichisyours,andgoyourway.Itismydesiretogivetothislastjustasmuchastoyou.15Isn’titlawfulformetodowhatIwanttowithwhatIown?Orisyoureyeevil,becauseIamgood?’16Sothelastwillbefirst,andthefirstlast.Formanyarecalled,butfewarechosen.”
Matthew 20:17 As Yeshua was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside, and on the way he said to them,
18“Behold,wearegoinguptoJerusalem,andtheSonofManwillbedeliveredtothechiefpriestsandscribes,andtheywillcondemnhimtodeath,19andwillhandhimovertotheGentilestomock,toscourge,andtocrucify;andthethirddayhewillberaisedup.”
Matthew 20:20 Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came to him with her sons, kneeling and asking a certain thing of him.
21 He said to her, “Whatdoyouwant?” She said to him, “Command that these, my two sons, may sit, one on your right hand and one on your left hand, in your Kingdom.”
Matthew 20:22 But Yeshua answered, “Youdon’tknowwhatyouareasking.AreyouabletodrinkthecupthatIamabouttodrink,andbeimmersedwiththeimmersionthatIamimmersedwith?” They said to him, “We are able.”
Matthew 20:23 He said to them, “Youwillindeeddrinkmycup,andbeimmersedwiththeimmersionthatIamimmersedwith;buttositonmyrighthandandonmylefthandisnotminetogive,butitisforwhomithasbeenpreparedbymyFather.”
Matthew 20:24 When the ten heard it, they were indignant with the two brothers.
Matthew 20:25 But Yeshua summoned them, and said, “Youknowthattherulersofthenationslorditoverthem,andtheirgreatonesexerciseauthorityoverthem.26Itshallnotbesoamongyou;butwhoeverdesirestobecomegreatamongyoushallbe{TR reads “let him be” instead of “shall be”}yourservant.27Whoeverdesirestobefirstamongyoushallbeyourbondservant,28evenastheSonofMancamenottobeserved,buttoserve,andtogivehislifeasaransomformany.”
Matthew 20:29 As they went out from Jericho, a great multitude followed him.
30 Behold, two blind men sitting by the road, when they heard that Yeshua was passing by, cried out, “Lord, have mercy on us, you son of David!”
31 The multitude rebuked them, telling them that they should be quiet, but they cried out even more, “Lord, have mercy on us, you son of David!”
Matthew 20:32 Yeshua stood still and called them, and asked, “Whatdoyouwantmetodoforyou?”
Matthew 20:33 They told him, “Lord, that our eyes may be opened.”
Matthew 20:34 Yeshua, being moved with compassion, touched their eyes; and immediately their eyes received their sight, and they followed him.
