John 8:2 Now very early in the morning, he came again into the temple, and all the people came to him. He sat down and taught them.
3 The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman taken in adultery. Having set her in the middle,
4 they told him, “Rabbi, we found this woman in adultery, in the very act.
5 Now in our Torah, Moses commanded us to stone such women.{Leviticus 20:10; Deuteronomy 22:22} What then do you say about her?”
6 They said this testing him, that they might have something to accuse him of. But Yeshua stooped down and wrote on the ground with his finger.
7 But when they continued asking him, he looked up and said to them, “Hewhoiswithoutsinamongyou,lethimthrowthefirststoneather.”8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground with his finger.
John 8:9 They, when they heard it, being convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning from the oldest, even to the last. Yeshua was left alone with the woman where she was, in the middle.
10 Yeshua, standing up, saw her and said, “Woman,whereareyouraccusers?Didnoonecondemnyou?”
John 8:11 She said, “No one, Lord.” Yeshua said, “NeitherdoIcondemnyou.Goyourway.Fromnowon,sinnomore.”{NU includes Yochanan 7:53–Yochanan 8:11, but puts brackets around it to indicate that the textual critics had less confidence that this was original.}
John 8:12 Again, therefore, Yeshua spoke to them, saying, “Iamthelightoftheworld.{Isaiah 60:1}Hewhofollowsmewillnotwalkinthedarkness,butwillhavethelightoflife.”
John 8:13 The Pharisees therefore said to him, “You testify about yourself. Your testimony is not valid.”
John 8:14 Yeshua answered them, “EvenifItestifyaboutmyself,mytestimonyistrue,forIknowwhereIcamefrom,andwhereIamgoing;butyoudon’tknowwhereIcamefrom,orwhereIamgoing.15Youjudgeaccordingtotheflesh.Ijudgenoone.16EvenifIdojudge,myjudgmentistrue,forIamnotalone,butIamwiththeFatherwhosentme.17It’salsowritteninyourTorahthatthetestimonyoftwopeopleisvalid.{Deuteronomy 17:6; 19:15}18Iamonewhotestifiesaboutmyself,andtheFatherwhosentmetestifiesaboutme.”
John 8:19 They said therefore to him, “Where is your Father?” Yeshua answered, “YouknowneithermenormyFather.Ifyouknewme,youwouldknowmyFatheralso.”20 Yeshua spoke these words in the treasury, as he taught in the temple. Yet no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.
21 Yeshua said therefore again to them, “Iamgoingaway,andyouwillseekme,andyouwilldieinyoursins.WhereIgo,youcan’tcome.”
John 8:22 The Judeans therefore said, “Will he kill himself, because he says, ‘WhereIamgoing,youcan’tcome’ ?”
John 8:23 He said to them, “Youarefrombeneath.Iamfromabove.Youareofthisworld.Iamnotofthisworld.24Isaidthereforetoyouthatyouwilldieinyoursins;forunlessyoubelievethatIam{or, I AM}he,youwilldieinyoursins.”
John 8:25 They said therefore to him, “Who are you?” Yeshua said to them, “JustwhatIhavebeensayingtoyoufromthebeginning.26Ihavemanythingstospeakandtojudgeconcerningyou.However,hewhosentmeistrue;andthethingswhichIheardfromhim,theseIsaytotheworld.”
John 8:27 They didn’t understand that he spoke to them about the Father.
28 Yeshua therefore said to them, “WhenyouhavelifteduptheSonofMan,thenyouwillknowthatIamhe,andIdonothingofmyself,butasmyFathertaughtme,Isaythesethings.29Hewhosentmeiswithme.TheFatherhasn’tleftmealone,forIalwaysdothethingsthatarepleasingtohim.”
John 8:30 As he spoke these things, many believed in him.
31 Yeshua therefore said to those Judeans who had believed him, “Ifyouremaininmyword,thenyouaretrulymydisciples.32Youwillknowthetruth,andthetruthwillmakeyoufree.”{Psalms 119:45}
John 8:33 They answered him, “We are Abraham’s offspring, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How do you say, ‘Youwillbemadefree’ ?”
John 8:34 Yeshua answered them, “MostcertainlyItellyou,everyonewhocommitssinisthebondservantofsin.35Abondservantdoesn’tliveinthehouseforever.Asonremainsforever.36IfthereforetheSonmakesyoufree,youwillbefreeindeed.37IknowthatyouareAbraham’soffspring,yetyouseektokillme,becausemywordfindsnoplaceinyou.38IsaythethingswhichIhaveseenwithmyFather;andyoualsodothethingswhichyouhaveseenwithyourfather.”
John 8:39 They answered him, “Our father is Abraham.” Yeshua said to them, “IfyouwereAbraham’schildren,youwoulddotheworksofAbraham.40Butnowyouseektokillme,amanwhohastoldyouthetruthwhichIheardfromGod.Abrahamdidn’tdothis.41Youdotheworksofyourfather.” They said to him, “We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father, God.”
John 8:42 Therefore Yeshua said to them, “IfGodwereyourfather,youwouldloveme,forIcameoutandhavecomefromGod.ForIhaven’tcomeofmyself,buthesentme.43Whydon’tyouunderstandmyspeech?Becauseyoucan’thearmyword.44Youareofyourfatherthedevil,andyouwanttodothedesiresofyourfather.Hewasamurdererfromthebeginning,anddoesn’tstandinthetruth,becausethereisnotruthinhim.Whenhespeaksalie,hespeaksonhisown;forheisaliar,andthefatheroflies.45ButbecauseItellthetruth,youdon’tbelieveme.46Whichofyouconvictsmeofsin?IfItellthetruth,whydoyounotbelieveme?47HewhoisofGodhearsthewordsofGod.Forthiscauseyoudon’thear,becauseyouarenotofGod.”
John 8:48 Then the Judeans answered him, “Don’t we say well that you are a Samaritan, and have a demon?”
John 8:49 Yeshua answered, “Idon’thaveademon,butIhonormyFatherandyoudishonorme.50ButIdon’tseekmyownglory.Thereisonewhoseeksandjudges.51Mostcertainly,Itellyou,ifapersonkeepsmyword,hewillneverseedeath.”
John 8:52 Then the Judeans said to him, “Now we know that you have a demon. Abraham died, as did the prophets; and you say, ‘Ifamankeepsmyword,hewillnevertasteofdeath.’53 Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? The prophets died. Who do you make yourself out to be?”
John 8:54 Yeshua answered, “IfIglorifymyself,mygloryisnothing.ItismyFatherwhoglorifiesme,ofwhomyousaythatheisourGod.55Youhavenotknownhim,butIknowhim.IfIsaid,‘Idon’tknowhim,’Iwouldbelikeyou,aliar.ButIknowhimandkeephisword.56YourfatherAbrahamrejoicedtoseemyday.Hesawitandwasglad.”
John 8:57 The Judeans therefore said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old! Have you seen Abraham?”
John 8:58 Yeshua said to them, “Mostcertainly,Itellyou,beforeAbrahamcameintoexistence,IAM.{Exodus 3:14}”
John 8:59 Therefore they took up stones to throw at him, but Yeshua hid himself and went out of the temple, having gone through the middle of them, and so passed by.
