He was the 13th Signer of the Mayflower Compact. He was servant to John Carver, who became the first governor, and held various other colony posts. The Carvers survived the first winter but both died in the spring. Since they had no children, John Howland is thought to have inherited their estate.
He actually died in Rocky Nook, Kingston which was then part of Plymouth.
He was a passenger on the Mayflower which left Plymouth, England in the fall of 1620 and arrived in America in November, 1620. During the voyage, he was swept overboard by high seas but was rescued.
