Thomas HACKWORTH, Revolutionary War Soldier, appeared in the Bedford County, Virginia Court on April 11, 1833, and made declaration for a pension on account of his war services, wherein he stated, among other things, that he was 70 years of age; that he entered the service in March 1781,)Note: Thomas was born in 1763, therefore he was 18 years old) under Captain Alexander Clemins and Lieutenant Conrad Speece as a drafted militiaman; that he left his home in Bedford County, Virginia, and reported at New London for duty to guard magazines there; and was in the service for three months when he was discharged in June, 1781; that he was again drafted for service in July or August, 1781, and served in Captain John Trigg's company of the regiment commanded by Colonel Tucker; that he marched to Yorktown, Virginia and guarded prisoners surrendered there as they were being taken from place of surrender to Winchester, Virginia; that he was discharged in October, 1781, and subsequently returned to his home in Bedford County. Thomas Hackworth was born April 11, 1763 in Bedford, Virginia. He is probably the son of George Hackworth, Sr., who
moved from Caroline County, Virginia, to Bedford County sometime after 1749. George underwent limited service in the
Bedford County militia during the French and Indian War. In March, 1781, Thomas was drafted into the militia as a private
and his first duty was to guard a magazine in his county for three months. Two months later he was drafted again and his
company marched to Yorktown (along with his probable brother John). He was discharged on October 20, the day after
Cornwallis surrendered, but was then employed for a month in guarding the prisoners taken on the surrender of Cornwallis
and marched with them from Yorktown to Winchester, Virginia, where he was discharged. A few years later he married
Elizabeth Johnson January 27, 1786 in Bedford, Virginia, daughter of Benjamin Johnson and Mary Moorman. He received a
pension for his military service beginning in 1833 in Bedford County, and later in Greenup County, Kentucky. Thomas died
April 23, 1855 in Greenup, Kentucky. Five other Hackworths from Bedford County who were probably Thomas' brothers
saw some form of service during the Revolutionary period. Augustine (1746-1847), served with his brother William in Lord
Dunmore's War, and served in 1789 in an expedition against the Cherokees and fought them in a battle at Lookout Mountain.
William (c.1749-1831) fought Indians on the frontier, helped run the colonial governor out of Virginia in 1776 and defended
the Virginia capital at Williamsburg, fought in some of the notable battles of the Revolution, including Trenton, Monmouth and
Brandywine; he endured the winter encampments at Morristown, Valley Forge and Bound Brook, and survived to return to
farm in Bedford County, where the "old soldier" raised his family and died in 1831 at the ripe old age of eighty-two. George,
Jr. (1752-c.1815) was a soldier in the 5th Virginia Regiment and engaged in the same campaigns as William. John (c.1743-
1826) was present at the surrender of Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown in 1781 with Thomas. Joseph worked at the New
London "laboratory" (munitions factory) in Bedford County. The name HACKWORTH came from HACK family who lived
in Worth, Devonshire, England.
