Ensign John Nash

GEN: "It is known that he was a partisan of the famous Capt. Shays. That insurrection, as it is called, and as it undoubtedly was, GEN: must not, however, be judged by too rigid rules. Honest and upright men were on opposite sides in that affair, in one case, GEN: as will be seen in this Record, brothers of the same household. There are many who, to this day, justify that movement, as a GEN: necessary resistance of oppression. And all agree that it did eventually modify the action of the government. GEN: Ensign John Nash kept a Tavern in Amherst, in his latter years. The house stood on the place now (1850) owned by Mrs. GEN: Benjamin, a short distance south of Amherst College. the sign is now in the possession of Mr. William Boltwood of Amherst. GEN: The sign said,"Drink for the Thirsty, Food for the Hungry, Lodging for the Weary, and good keeping for Horses, by John Nash." GEN: The Rev. Sylverster Nash, 1853.

John next married Mary Graves in 1754. (Mary Graves was born in Hatfield, Mass. and died before 1778.)
